Is it hard to set up the platform for observing?
Platform set up is easy. Set the platform on the ground keeping it level and point it North. That's it! No heavy lifting of bulky scopes on mount, no fussing with tripods and it only takes seconds.
Will digital setting circles work with a platform?
Yes, to use digital setting circles, change the setting in the DSC's set up menu to equatorial platform. This freezes the computers internal clock and allows the platforms movement to perform this function. Some brands of DSCs are set up to allow the platform to be reset without a new star alignment.
How long will it take to get my platform?
Unfortunately manufacturers of astronomy equipment have the reputation of missing delivery dates by weeks and even months. I do not believe that making unrealistic promises is a good way to treat customers. My platforms are currently shipping in four weeks or less and I am always easy to reach if anyone has questions on their platform.
Can I take photographs with the platform?
The platform can be used for imaging with short exposure systems such as high gain video cameras but will not work well for long exposures photos. Take a look at the platform imaging page for some examples.
Can I use the platform when I travel?
The platform can be used 5 degrees North or South of it's set latitude, or a total of a 750 mile range by adjusting the leveling pads. It can be used at any longitude within this latitude zone.
Why doesn't the scope just fall off the platform?
The top of the platform actually sits level in its mid travel position. The tilt is limited to about 7-degrees in either direction or a total of 14 degrees travel so the scope never comes close to its tipping point. This it why a platform must be reset every hour.
To use the platform, the top is slid over to the west side for the start of its run. It tilts downward 7 degrees in the start position. Over the course of 1 hour, the top of the platform slides while slightly rotating to the east untill it is tilting upward 7 degrees and automaticly stops.
